Although I have succeeded academically throughout my life, there has always been a creative light shining through, which I have gradually harnessed into a passion for product design.
Growing up in a sporty family in the South West of England, I was and continue to be active, partaking in many sports, most recently running 5Ks up and down the hills of Falmouth! I also love video games and have discovered a talent for PC building as a result.
2014
Starting off year 7 in an unfamiliar school was undoubtedly a daunting prospect. Thankfully, my Resistant Material Technology teacher's far-fetched stories of the various ways in which students had lost body parts in his workshop, helped put my mind at ease! Unsurprisingly then, with such an engaging teacher, RMT became something to look forward to each week, and I unknowingly began my journey towards a career in product design.
2016
With the unexpected closure of my first secondary school and a move to a much bigger one, it felt like I'd been thrown in at the deep end again. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise though, as their Design & Technology department featured more than double the workshop space, kitted out with cutting edge equipment. This allowed me to be more ambitious with my design projects and hone my prototyping skills.
2018
A difficult but indelible year for me. In May, I was diagnosed with brain cancer; at 15 I felt like the life I was just starting to establish had fallen apart. Nevertheless, along with my family, we rallied and, after six months of intensive treatment (and a few scars!), I was out the other side. I look back now to find that the experience was instrumental for me, not only in the contextualisation of my project: Stride, but more widely in my passion for design-for-disability.
2019
After returning to school, I finished year 11 with seven GCSEs graded 6-9. After a well deserved summer holiday to Rhodes, Greece, I turned my sights towards A-levels and the ever-looming end of full-time education. Before that though, I had to choose my subject options; DT, of course, was top of the list, accompanied by Chemistry, and Economics - subjects which have turned out to be more useful for Product Design than you might have thought!
2021
The completion of my A-levels with an A* in DT, and As in the other two (not to mention my Extended Project Qualification: another design project under my belt!). I set my heart on studying Product Design at university and, after receiving an unconditional offer at Falmouth, I prepared for uni life. But not before I had spent my gap year earning money and gaining design experience as a Showroom Advisor at B&Q!
2025
After nearly a dozen different design projects (and just a few drunken shenanigans!), it seems that three years of studying Sustainable Product Design at Falmouth has come to an end altogether too quickly. I now look toward yet another daunting prospect: 'The Real World'. Thankfully, the multitude of experience and contacts gained whilst at uni should give me a good basis upon which to build a successful career in Product Design.
